Should I use Green Glue Tubes or Pails?

Posted by BIP on 26th Feb 2015

A common question we receive from our customers who are interested in soundproofing solutions is, "Should I use Green Glue Noise-proofing Compound in tubes or five gallon buckets?".

The question we ask these customers is, "How big is the project?".  The answer is the determining factor whether they should go with cases of Green Glue adhesive tubes or the larger 5 gallon pails.

Most Green Glue testing is done with 2 tubes per piece of 4' x 8' drywall.  However, if you choose to use only 1 tube, you would still retain over half of the soundproofing results (approx 60-70% retention).  When dealing with the labor and material costs, we personally would recommend going with the full 2 tubes and not sacrifice results.

Green Glue Coverage:

2 tubes per 4 x 8 drywall (32 square feet)

1 tube = half a piece of drywall (16 sf)

12 tubes = 192 sf

5 Gallon Pail = 23 tubes (368 sf)

Applying Green Glue from 5 Gallon Pails:

Use of a 5 gallon pail of Green Glue requires a bulk dispensing gun which will add additional costs to the project. However with our pricing at Buy Insulation Products.com the cost of 1 pail and 1 bulk dispensing gun is still less expensive than 2 cases of tubes.

Project Size:

Obviously if the project is less than around 400sf, using a 5 gallon pail would not be appropriate.

Once the project hits around 400sf + the use of Green Glue pails will be the cheaper option over tubes.  However, tubes are easier to use, so you must factor that in to the equation.

Example Costs (as of Feb 2015)

750-800sf = 48 tubes ($696) or 2 Pails + gun ($554) difference of $142
